Religious Statues

There are a variety of Shrines and Temples around Japan, each one belongs to either Buddhist or Shinto religions. Each is also dedicated to a specific sect of religion, and is often unknown to most people which is which or to who a shrine is dedicated.

Even though it sounds confusing each shrine or temples has its own personality. This personality is best shown, in my opinion, through the variety of statues found among the grounds.

This is just a small sample of statues from shrines and temples near my apartment.

  1. The best thing about WordPress is the exchange of cultural information and this post speaks directly to that!
How fascinating that you could take such varied photos right near your home! Truly remarkable. Can you tell us about the third image (multiple male figures on the tiered slope;) I’d love to know more about their history/religion.
    Great post!

    • I am quite fortunate to live in the area I do with such great varied cultural places I can visit.

Those little statues are called Jizo, and I have several photos from different places and plan to post about them this weekend. Thanks for the idea as well.
